Heinrihs Vorkals

1994
Graphic art. Paper, watercolours, pencil. 44 x 32,5 cm.

Heinrihs Vorkals’ creative activity is manifested within the framework of conceptual art, developing the principles of serigraphy and fragmentarism, using drawing, pastel and watercolour techniques. Already from the 1960s, the artist’s creative ideas and work were influenced by the strong impulses of USA pop culture, which the artist absorbed indirectly (having never been in the United States) from American pop artists such as Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg. Heinrihs Vorkals is attracted by the irony expressed by these artists in interpreting the stories related to political and social events in the United States. He is endowed with an unusual ability to visualise found or captured connections in seemingly light, even airy compositions that are actually complex in structure, reasoning and possible conclusions. Images of world-famous works of art of the past centuries are interspersed with contemporary ones or those found in the Latvian classics, some in the closer, others in the far plane, or even in some deeper and barely visible places.
