Earthworks
Andris Eglitis
2015
Painting. Oil, canvas. 120 x 190 cm .
“Earthworks” paintings were made in Drustu Parish, on the rural farm, built in the 19th century, but abandoned after the war, in the “wild laboratory” of Android Eglitis. The surroundings of the houses have inspired “Earth works” both in landscape motifs and in the artist’s chosen method – painting these scenes only with earth pigments. The arsenal of colors found by Eglitis includes brown, red and blue clay, gravel, earth, lime, gypsum, chalk, ash and coal. By mixing one pigment with oil or varnish, you can get up to twelve shades of color.
