Vika Eksta’s exhibition “The Dream of the Sea”

Vika Eksta’s exhibition “The Dream of the Sea” is on at the PAiR residency in Pāvilosta, Ernesta Šneidera Square 11, from 29 June to 11 August. It showcases Vika Eksta’s photography and video works, accompanied by compositions from organist Una Cintiņa’s album “Songs of the Sea” and a song by Pāvilosta local Haralds Lukšēvičs. The exhibition is curated by philosopher Helmuts Caune and supported by the VV Foundation.

The PAiR artist residency, founded by the VV Foundation for the support of contemporary art, is located at Ernesta Šneidera Square 11 in Pāvilosta. Each year, visual artists, writers, researchers, curators, and representatives from other cultural fields periodically reside and work there. The residency provides a stimulating environment free of distractions and conducive to cross-disciplinary dialogue, allowing artists to develop individual and collaborative projects.

Photographer and video and performance artist Vika Eksta (1987) spent two separate periods at the residency: in March 2023 and March 2024. Unlike others who often choose to work on themes or subjects geographically more or less remote during their residency at PAiR, Eksta selected the very location itself – Pāvilosta, its people, urban environment, and the conditions dictated by its nature – as the subject for her artistic exploration. The observations made during her two March residencies will be made accessible to both locals and visitors of Pāvilosta on 29 June, when the exhibition “The Dream of the Sea” will open at the residency gallery.

The sea as an element, natural phenomenon, unavoidable presence, symbol and enchantment is a significant motif in the exhibition forming a connection between visual and auditory forms: static frames interact with dynamic sound compositions, inspired by the sea. The fascination with the sea has historically and in modern times been politically, economically, and romantically determined, and such fascination continues to manifest in Pāvilosta. The city, first mentioned in historical records dating back to 1253, may not hold an economic significance as a coastal trading hub today. However, the romanticized or idealized aspect of the sea finds profound expression in Pāvilosta. During the summer season, it becomes the ultimate destination for many inland Latvian residents, each year transforming the place beyond recognition for a few months.

But Pāvilosta exists year-round, and Eksta’s camera has captured it precisely during the “off-season” – a time when hotels and guesthouses are empty, cafes are mostly closed, and locals, with or without dogs, stroll along the beach instead of surfers and vacationers. In Eksta’s exhaustive collection of photographs, three core motifs stand out. First, the sea, the waves, and the coastline in all its harshness and relentlessness, the dunes and pine trees of the Kurzeme coast. Second, the urban environment of Pāvilosta – the beach, the port, and the symmetrical streets where historical and modern, the familiar and the foreign meet in architecture. And third, portraits of people, close-ups of faces, and lasting impressions: locals and visitors who have agreed to step before Eksta’s camera lens, representing a dimension of coastal life that is more real than a dream.

About Una Cintina

Una Cintiņa is an organist, conductor, and music director at the Church of Our Lady in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Born in Jūrmala, Latvia, to a family of musicians, Una began her music education in pre-school, singing in folk groups and learning to play the kokle, a traditional Latvian instrument. Una obtained her first academic degree at the Riga Cathedral Choir School in choir singing (1998) and church music (2001) with Vita Kalnciema (organ), followed by Bachelor’s (2005) and Master’s degrees (2007 and 2009) at the Latvian Academy of Music and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam under Sigvards Kļava (conducting), Prof. Tālivaldis Deksnis (organ), and Jacques van Oortmerssen (organ). She regularly takes part in New Music festivals, premiering new compositions, working on special projects with representatives of other art forms—actors, dancers, puppet theatre, etc.—and participating as a soloist in concerts with orchestras, choirs, and various chamber music settings.  A significant place in Una’s concert programs is reserved for promoting Latvian music and works by contemporary composers, as well as familiarizing the audience with, in her view, important composers of the 20th century.

Contemporary Art Tent at LAMPA Conversation Festival

VV Foundation, Zuzeum Art Centre and Arterritory announce their participation at LAMPA Conversation Festival

With great excitement, VV Foundation, Zuzeum Art Centre and Arterritory announce their participation at LAMPA Conversation Festival that will take place in Cesis on July 5-6. Joining their efforts, the three organizations will present the Contemporary Art Tent, a two-day event programme dedicated to Latvian contemporary art, filled with discussions, talks and workshops with leading industry personalities.

This will be the first time in LAMPA festival history that a whole stage will be dedicated to discussing Latvian contemporary art, with all its challenges, dreams and risks. The programme of events is designed to engage a wide range of topics, from education and censorship to public art and LGBTQ+ representation. There will also be interactive workshops for children and adults.

Programme of events:

1. Discussion “Art in public space, its importance in Riga and regions”

July 6 / 14.00-15.15

Moderator: Una Meistare.

Participants: Solvita Krese, Mārtiņš Mintaurs, Kārlis Kanderovskis, Reinis Dzudzilo, Maija Rudovska.

A large part of Latvia’s contemporary art industry is centred in Riga. However, in recent years, some notable projects have been founded to bring art to the regions. Together with the industry’s regional representatives, we will discuss the influence of contemporary art on the social environment outside of Riga, the challenges it faces, and the benefits it brings.

2. Private Support for the Arts: A Discussion of Private Art Collections and Their Responsibility to Art History

July 5 / 14.00-15.15

Moderator: Jānis Zuzāns.

Participants: Jeļena Buraja, Vita Liberte, Māris Vītols, Edgars Jaunups.

Art collectors in Latvia form a very narrow circle, but largely because of them, our artists and galleries can support themselves. By inviting the leading private art collectors to this discussion, we will learn their motivation, how they see their role in the industry and their responsibility towards art history and the creation of Latvia’s cultural heritage.

3. Latvian galleries’ role in cultural, social and economic life

July 5 / 15.30-16.45

Moderator: Sandra Krastiņa.

Participants: Indriķis Ģelzis, Astrida Riņķe, Raivis Alksnis, Elīna Drāke.

Some of Latvia’s art galleries have existed since the beginning of the 90s, some are brand new. To an outside observer, it may seem that they exist in their own, separate world, but art galleries are parts of a larger ecosystem. Together with representatives of leading Latvian galleries, we will try to understand the fundamental role of these institutions in our society.

4. The LGBTQ+ community and contemporary art: opportunities for cooperation

July 5 / 17.00-18.15

Moderator: Henriks Eliass Zēgners.

Participants: Mailo Štern, Konstantīns Žukovs, Linda Curika, Igors Gubenko.

Recently, progress has been made in Latvia in the field of LGBTQ+ rights, but in this respect, we still lag behind our neighbours – this applies not only to laws but also to social attitudes. Can the art community, with its progressive worldview and cultural influence, help promote tolerance and diversity? Join us to discuss what unites the LGBTQ+ community and the contemporary art industry, and how we can help each other and make Latvia more accepting of all people.

5. Workshop for children by Zuzeum

July 6 / 11.00-12.15

The Contemporary Art Tent’s youngest visitors will get a practical introduction to contemporary art in the creative workshop, where they will unleash their creativity accompanied by professional art educators.

The workshop will be held in Latvian, but the tasks can also be explained in English or Russian.

6. Discussion “Where is art education in Latvia heading?”

July 6 / 12.30-13.45

Moderator: Jānis GaĆgis.

Participants: Dāvis Sīmanis, Antra Priede, Sabīne Werner, Timur Thomsons.

Quality art education is necessary for the development of creative talents. Together with the POST interdisciplinary MA program representatives, we will discuss the current state of art education in Latvia. Why is it important to invest in education in the arts and creative industries? Are we innovating or continuing tradition? Can we make Latvia an attractive destination for art education?

7. Young generation’s perspectives in the art industry: education, practice, job opportunities

July 6 / 15.30-16.45

Moderator: Vita Liberte.

Participants: Tīna Pētersone, Jegors Buimisters, Sabīne Vernere, Raivis Alksnis.

What motivates young people when they decide to connect their lives with art? Is it a passion, a calling or a calculated career decision? Do the young art professionals regret their choice, or would they encourage others to follow the same path? In this conversation, representatives of the new generation of art professionals will share their experiences and discuss what opportunities Latvia has for those who will shape our culture in the coming decades and how we can support them.

8. Art and censorship: are there limits to freedom of expression in art?

July 6 / 17.00-18.15

Moderator: Eva Johansone.

Participants: Kaspars Vanags, Annemarija Gulbe, Katrīna Jaunupe, Edgars Raginskis.

In previous years, there have been several censorship scandals in Latvia, and sometimes the harshest criticism has been directed at the art industry. At a time when the world has become more unstable and tensions of various kinds are increasing, many are wondering: should freedom of expression be protected at all costs, or can we limit it for the sake of security, morality or social cohesion?

9. Workshop: ask an artist!

July 6 / 18.30-19.45

Moderator: Helmuts Caune.

Participants: Indriķis Ģelzis, Ieva Astahovska, Andris Eglītis.

In this workshop, the audience can ask industry representatives questions. Art, especially contemporary art, can seem strange: many myths and stereotypes are associated. To shed light on them, in this interactive event, we invite you to ask art industry representatives questions about themselves, their work, and art in general!
