Ilmars Blumbergs
1943 - 2016, Latvia
The artistic tradition of Ilmārs Blumbergs (1943–2016, Latvia) is often associated with research, philosophical and aesthetic qualities. The main object of his research in stage design, painting and other areas is the theme of life and death. Blumbergs is characterised by personal approach to the object he is interested in, dynamic use of colours and facture. Blumbergs graduated from the Painting Department of the Art Academy of Latvia and studied the specialty of stage design under the lead of Gunārs Zemgals. In the time period from 1969 to 1985, he worked as a theatre designer at Daile Theatre, including work as the chief artist. Blumbergs has also worked as a stage designer and costume designer at theatres and opera houses elsewhere in Europe. He has been participating in exhibitions since 1962 by representing a wide range of activities – being active not only in painting, but also print, sculpture, cinema and installation art. In 2001, Blumbergs represented Latvia with the movie “Magic Flute” (Director Viesturs Kairišs) at the 49th international Venice Arts Biennial.
