Amanda Ziemele

1990, Latvia

Amanda Ziemele (1990, Latvia) is one of the leading Latvian artists of her generation. She graduated from the Visual Arts Department of the Art Academy of Latvia with a bachelor’s degree in painting and continued her studies at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, where she pursued interdisciplinary and experimental painting, supported by a DAAD postgraduate scholarship.

Ziemele’s work is distinguished by formal experimentation, an interplay of space and material, and elements of play and surprise, often expressed through humour and paradox. The artist has held several solo exhibitions, including “Quantum Hair Implants” (2019, Kim? Contemporary Art Centre, Riga), for which she received the Purvītis Prize in 2021, and “Sun Has Teeth” (2023, Dome Hall of the Latvian National Museum of Art). In 2024, Ziemele represented Latvia at the 60th Venice Biennale with the exhibition “O day and night, but this is wondrous strange… and therefore as a stranger give it welcome”, presented in the Latvian Pavilion at the Arsenale.

Her works are held in the collections of the Latvian National Museum of Art, the VV Foundation, the Zuzāns Collection, as well as various private collections in Latvia and abroad.
