Johanna Ulfsak
1987, Estonia
Johanna Ulfsak (b. 1987, Estonia) is a textile artist and designer based in Tallinn, Estonia. She holds a Master’s degree in Textile Design from Kolding School of Design, Denmark. She continued her studies in Japan at Kawashima Textile School, where she acquired skills in Kasuri weaving and various ancient plant-dyeing techniques. Following her studies, she gained professional experience at several fashion and textile companies in Switzerland, Germany, and Estonia.
Working mainly with slow and traditional methods such as hand-weaving, wood carving, and painting on textile, her practice focuses on time and material hierarchies. Ulfsak combines traditional weaving techniques with contemporary art concepts to create unique objects and installations that challenge established boundaries between disciplines.
Ulfsak’s work has been shown at Draakon Gallery, Tallinn (2024); Margot Samel Gallery, New York (2024); Tartu Art Museum (2024); the Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design (2022); Tallinn Art Hall’s Lasnamäe Pavilion (2022); the curated section of the Collectible Design Fair, Brussels (2022); an artist exchange in collaboration with Kärt Ojavee at the Cotton Factory, Hamilton, Canada (2022); Galerie Meyer Kainer, Vienna (2020); the Artishok Biennale (2020); and the Espoo Museum of Modern Art (2019), among others.
Since 2025, she has been a recipient of the artist’s salary awarded by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Estonia. Since 2020, she has been a guest lecturer at the Estonian Academy of Arts. Ulfsak’s works are held in the public collection of the Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design. She is a member of the Estonian Artists’ Association and the Estonian Textile Artists’ Association.
